Choosing the Right Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL) for DFW Job Sites

Self-retracting lifelines have become the go-to fall protection device for DFW contractors — and for good reason. Unlike traditional shock-absorbing lanyards that require 18+ feet of clearance, a good SRL activates within inches of a fall. But not all SRLs are the same. Here’s how to choose the right one.

Class 1 vs. Class 2

The most important distinction is Class 1 vs. Class 2 per ANSI/ASSE Z359.14:

• Class 1 (Leading Edge) — tested for leading-edge applications where the SRL cable can contact and bend over the edge of a surface. Required for roofing, structural steel, and any application where the worker can fall over an unprotected edge. Look for PHX Series Class 1 units from Ultra-Safe.
• Class 2 — standard fall arrest, tested for overhead anchorage only. Lower cost, but cannot be used at leading edges. Suitable for work platforms, elevated walkways, and areas with overhead anchor points.

Web vs. Wire Rope

Web SRLs (1″ nylon web) are lighter, easier to handle, and more comfortable for all-day wear. The Ultra-Safe PHX Series 1″ web SRLs are ideal for roofing and structural steel. The Ultra Leaf 3/4″ web models are extremely compact for tight spaces.

Wire rope SRLs are more durable in abrasive environments — perfect for iron workers, oil field platforms, and industrial settings where the cable contacts rough surfaces. The PHX Series 3/16″ wire rope SRLs handle the toughest Texas job sites.

Length Selection

• 7 ft — Most common for roofing and structural steel. Keeps slack minimal.
• 11–20 ft — For work requiring more horizontal movement along a lifeline or anchor.
• 30–66 ft — Tower work, communication towers, wind turbine maintenance.

Twin SRLs for 100% Tie-Off

OSHA requires 100% tie-off when transitioning between anchor points. Twin SRLs (two retractable units in one housing) allow you to always have one leg connected when moving. Essential for iron workers and tower climbers in the DFW area.
