Fall Protection for DFW Wind Energy Technicians: What You Need
Texas leads the nation in wind energy — and the DFW area sits at the edge of the Texas wind corridor that stretches from West Texas through the Panhandle to North Texas. If you’re a wind turbine technician working in or around the DFW area, here’s the fall protection gear you need.
Why Wind Turbine Fall Protection is Different
Climbing a wind turbine tower means:
- Working at extreme heights — 200 to 400+ feet
- Climbing a fixed ladder inside or outside the tower
- Working on the nacelle and blade assembly at height
- Potentially transferring from the ladder to a work platform at the top
This requires a completely different set of fall protection gear than typical construction.
Tower Working Harnesses
Wind turbine technicians need a tower working harness with multiple D-ring positions for both fall arrest and positioning/suspension. The Ultra-Safe 96094BPT tower working harness features 5 D-rings including padded seat and waist straps for comfort during long work sessions at height. The 96096BFPT model offers 6 D-rings for maximum connection versatility.
Fixed Ladder Climb Systems
Most modern turbines have an internal fixed ladder safety system (cable or rail), but many older towers require a self-contained cable safety climb system. The Ultra-Safe cable safety climb systems (50’–100′ SS cable) provide automatic fall arrest protection while climbing.
SRLs at the Top
Once you’re at the nacelle level, you need a Class 1 leading-edge SRL for work on the exterior. The Ultra-Safe PHX Series wire rope SRLs from 11′ to 66′ are certified for this application. The 30′ and 50′ models give you the range needed to move around the nacelle safely.
Twin SRLs for Transition Points
Transferring from the ladder to a work platform requires 100% tie-off. Twin SRLs let you always maintain one connection point during the transfer.
